Update: COVID-19 Pandemic Unemployment Payment

If you were an employee or self-employed and lost your job due to the coronavirus pandemic, between 13 March 2020 and 7 July 2021, the COVID-19 Pandemic Unemployment Payment (PUP) was open to you.

From 8 July, you can no longer apply for the PUP.

However, if you became redundant before 8 July and were getting Maternity Benefit, you could apply for the PUP once the benefit claim closes.

If you were due the PUP on 8 July and are still eligible, your payment will continue. The eligibility is as follows:

  • You are between 18 and 66 years old,
  • You currently live in the Republic of Ireland,
  • You lost your job or were temporarily laid off due to the COVID-19 pandemic or were self-employed, and your trading income ceased or reduced to €960 over a rolling eight week period.

You could also qualify if:

  • You worked in the Republic of Ireland or were a cross border frontier worker,
  • You are a non-EU/EEA worker who has lost employment due to the COVID-19,
  • You are a student (or a non-EU/EEA student) who has lost a job due to the COVID-19 pandemic (up to 7 September 2021 only),
  • You are living in Direct Provision and have lost employment due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

If the following applies, you will not qualify:

  • You voluntarily left your employment or self-employment
  • You lost your role on or after 8 July 2021
