New EV sales fall 24% in first seven months of 2024
New electric car sales dropped 24% between January and July when compared to the same period last year, new data shows.
The figures from the Central Statistics Office reveal that 12,765 new EVs were licensed during the seven month period.
14% of all new cars licensed for the first time were electric, compared with 18% in the same period in 2023.
The most popular brand of new electric car licensed in July was the Volkswagen ID.4, followed by the Tesla Model Y, and the Kia EV 6.
In total, 94,231 new private cars were licensed in the year to July, up 3% on the same time last year.
The number of new petrol and electric hybrid cars rose by 33% when compared with the same period in 2023.
This has driven up the share of hybrids among new private cars from 18% last year to 22%.
The combined share of petrol and diesel cars among new private cars licensed so far this year has remained about the same as in 2023 at 56%.
30,911 new cars licensed were petrol compared with 31,155 in the same period of 2023, a fall of 1%.
The number of new diesel cars licensed rose by 10% to 21,624.
Today’s data shows that Toyota was the most popular make of new private car licensed last month, followed by Volkswagen, Hyundai, Skoda, and Kia.
Together, these five makes represented 55% of all new private cars licensed during the month.
