Child Maintenance – Reform

Child Maintenance System Reform

Minister for Social Protection Heather Humphreys, TD, announced changes to the social welfare means test which disregards child maintenance payments from the means test for the first time.

Since 4th June 2024, any child maintenance payment a person receives will no longer be taken into account when assessing their income for means tested social welfare payments, which may result in a higher rate of payment.

If a person is getting a maintenance payment that isn’t child maintenance, this will continue to be assessed in the normal manner.
