Higher annual housing targets expected after budget

New annual housing targets that will be significantly higher than the current figures are set to be published after the Budget in October.

The figures will consider new research from the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) on population and housing demand due to be published this month.

It is expected to say that between 52,000 to 55,000 new homes are needed annually.

The draft revised National Planning Framework, which looks at population projections up to 2040, will also be completed this month and will include high level housing targets.

The final Framework will then go to the Government in September, and it will have a role in deciding the exact new housing targets.

The matter was discussed at the Cabinet Committee on Housing last week.

The meeting is understood to have been told that regardless of the precise final housing targets, there is agreement that they will increase significantly from the 33,000 yearly average set out in the Housing for All plan currently.
