Annual inflation rises to 1.4% in December – CSO

Inflation in Ireland is beginning to rise again, according to the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office.

The increase in the cost of living was 1.4% in the 12 months to December 2024, as measured by the CSO’s consumer price index.

This marks a doubling of inflation from the 0.7% level recorded in September and October of last year.

But the rise in the cost of living is still relatively low compared to the burst of inflation experienced during 2022 when the annual figure was 7.8%.

A significant driver of the latest increase in inflation was a rise in transport costs with petrol up 2.4%, while airfares rose 4.3% and taxi fares increased 8.7%

Package holidays rose by 7.2% while admittance to sports and participating in sports both increased 6%.

Prices in restaurants and hotels were up 3.7%.

The only areas to record a decline were clothing and footwear, which fell 8%, and furnishing and household equipment prices dropped 1.3%.
