Planning permissions down 10.9% in third quarter – CSO

New figures from the Central Statistics Office show an annual decrease of 10.9% in the total number of dwelling units approved in the third quarter of this year, with the number falling to 8,611 units from 9,662 units the same time last year.

The CSO said that houses accounted for 61% of all homes granted planning permission in three months from July to September, while apartments made up the remaining 39%.

Today’s figures show that the number of houses granted planning permission rose by 9% when compared with the third quarter of 2023, but apartment approvals fell by 31%.

Meanwhile, the number of multi-development houses receiving planning permission grew by 13% annually, from 3,632 units in 2023 to 4,101 units this year.

And there was an annual decrease of 3% in the number of one-off houses receiving planning permission compared with an annual increase of 2% in the second quarter of this year.

Today’s figures show that planning permission was granted for 1,293 apartments in Dublin in the third quarter of 2024, accounting for 39% of all apartments granted planning approval in the state.

There were 2,117 new homes approved in Dublin (1,293 apartments and 824 houses), which made up 24.6% of all dwelling units granted planning permission in the three month period.

On the other end of the scale, the West Region (Galway, Mayo, and Roscommon) recorded the lowest number of apartment units with 74 granted planning permission.

The CSO said that of the 6,693 individual applications for planning permissions granted in the third quarter 2024, 1,566 were for new construction dwellings, 1,930 for other new constructions, 2,089 for extensions and 1,108 permissions for alterations and conversions.
